ADVISERS

GUIDANCE FOR ADVISERS

The role of a delegation's adviser is based on your college's expectations, your personal preference and the needs of your delegation.

At some colleges especially community colleges with frequent turnover in student leadership the adviser is important for providing continuity from year to year. At colleges with customarily strong student leadership, the adviser can take a more passive role and let students learn from leading the delegation.

Advisers are often crucial in processing requests for funds and travel authorizations.

An adviser's most important responsibility is to perpetuate the delegation ... to make sure the college has a delegation for the coming year. When a void occurs in student leadership, an adviser can identify one or more students who might benefit from the leadership opportunity.

TISL provides unique opportunities for students to discover their leadership potential and grow personally. An effective adviser can help assure that students benefit from these opportunities.

BUDGET AND INVOICE

We provide a simple online budget worksheet to help you plan your delegation.

To access the budget worksheet, log in to your Online Control Panel and look for the "Budget & Invoice" button.

In conjunction with the budget worksheet, you may print your own invoice that you can submit to your college's finance office.

If you want to pay your fees by credit card, email your invoice to StateOffice@TISLonline.org and request an invoice you can pay with a credit card through PayPal.

The budget worksheet includes these expenses:

  • Fees paid to TISL

    • Basic Fee, which includes a certain number of delegates

    • Fee for extra delegates beyond the ones who are included in the basic fee

  • Expenses paid to others

    • Hotel expenses, including taxes

    • Parking estimate

The budget worksheet doesn't include:

  • Travel expenses such as gasoline.

  • Meals (three meals are included in the basic fee)

PARKING IN NASHVILLE

TISL has a special parking deal at the Public Square Garage, which is across the street from the DoubleTree Hotel and two blocks from the Capitol.

This is the recommended parking garage for all delegates ... those staying at the DoubleTree Hotel and those commuting from Nashville-area colleges.

1. Park at the Public Square Garage, 350 Deaderick Street. Take a parking ticket from the machine.

Important: This is an above-ground garage (see photo). Two blocks away is an underground garage by the same name. Don't be confused.

2. At the Capitol, buy a parking pass from the State Treasurer. TISL accepts cash, checks or credit cards.

One-size-fits-all parking pass: $75 (as of October 2023)

3. When exiting, insert in this order:

  • Parking pass you purchased from the State Treasurer.

  • Parking ticket you received when you entered the garage.

4. Exit the garage
